1Ti 2:1-2 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
The role of government in our society is very divided and controversial. In our churches, many godly people believe politics should not be mentioned from the pulpit, while many other godly people disagree. Today’s devotion is not a political one, but it is rather an encouragement of what we as saved Christians are to be doing.
Paul’s epistle to young Timothy gives us clear direction in who to pray for and why we should pray for them. The reason is found in verse two: “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”
If we continue reading, the next verses give further context.
1Ti 2:3-4 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
The furtherance of the gospel, so that souls can be saved, is the reason we as God’s people should actively be praying. Our leaders need prayer so that they can have the wisdom to allow the liberty of God’s Word to be spread around the country.
The United States is known as the land of the free and the home of the brave. The freedom that we have comes with a responsibility and that is to declare, send, and give towards the furtherance of the gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. No matter who wins this election, God is in control, and we have a responsibility to pray for those who are in authority.
Consider – Nero was on the throne in Rome when Paul charged believers to pray for the king. He was presently launching a violent persecution against the believers.
