Present Help

Ps 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Webster’s 1828 definition (present):
       1. Being in a certain place; opposed to absent.
       2. Now existing, or being at this time; not past or future

I believe this passage of Scripture has more than one application of the word present. Not only is God our refuge and strength in time of trouble, but He is also present with us. Just as Psalm 23:4 says, Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

In John 14:25 & 26, Jesus speaking says, These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Jesus told His disciples that He would not leave them comfortless. As believers, we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in us (1 Cor 6:19).

The second application in this passage is that of the current time. God is our refuge and strength, and He is at this moment at work in our lives. He has forgiven us of our sinful past; He has prepared for us a future home in heaven; and He is presently conforming us to the image of Christ.

Although we may be enduring difficult times, we can rest assured that not only is God’s presence with us, but also He is presently working within us.

Consider –  When trouble attacks, we do not have to wait for God to arrive; He is already there.
