My Lord Knows The Way

Ex 13:21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:
I still love to sing the old chorus we sang when I was just a teenager, “My Lord Knows The Way Through The Wilderness.” The tune is catchy, and the words contain doctrine that I could not understand fully in my youth. But I thank God for the simple truth that “all I have to do is follow.”
In their wilderness journey the children of Israel had the cloud by day and the fire by night to lead them on the way to the Promise Land. In the 33rd chapter of Exodus the Lord said He would send an angel before them to drive out the enemy and promised Moses that His presence would go with him in verse 14.
The only thing Moses and the people had to do was to follow the leader, to stay close to His presence. Moses even told the Lord in verse 15 that if God’s presence didn’t go with them, Moses didn’t want to go to Canaan.
God spoke to Moses as a friend, and Moses recognized the most pressing need was to know the presence of God, stay close to Him, and follow.
God knows me by Name, but for me to know Him:
• I need to be His friend (vs.11) John 15:15; John 14:15
• I need to follow him in the way (vs.13)
• I need to find grace in His sight (vs.12,13,16,17)
Just how closely do you want to follow the Lord? Peter followed afar off after they took Him in the garden. Once, when they first met, he sat at His feet in the boat as Jesus preached. When they forsook all and followed Him, they saw things others did not see, heard things others did not hear, and did things others could not do. All because He was with them.
It was the presence of God in their lives that made the difference.
Has there ever been a time when Christ called you by name to Himself and you trusted Him for Salvation? Has there ever been a time when God has called you to walk close to Him in the way? Are you close enough to Him to hear His voice if He were to speak to you? Do you desperately need His touch today?
Consider – It takes trust to follow in a path you know not and which seems contrary to reason and comfort.
