Mr 14:6 And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me
Jesus was visiting in the home of Simon, the leper. Enemies were trying to figure out a way to get rid of Him. They soon will think they’ve accomplished that, as He is nearing His crucifixion. While they were eating, Mary (John 12:3) came in, broke open a box of a precious ointment, and poured it on the head of Jesus.
Most did not understand this act of service to the Lord. The disciples even viewed it as a great waste. Mary who sat at the feet of Jesus, and who fell at His feet over the death of her brother—understood the significance of what she did. She had listened to Jesus intently, and when He spoke of His soon death and resurrection in Jerusalem, she believed His every Word.
So, she did what she could—she anointed His body for the burial. What love was in her heart! What sacrifice she made for Him! What service she fulfilled for her Lord! And how delighted Jesus was with her when He saw this act of faith and love!
Jesus did not rebuke Mary, but He did the disciples. His words remind us to be careful when we critique the ministry and service of others. Also, we are made aware that there will be those who do not understand our service to the Lord. But we cannot let this keep us from doing whatever the Lord has commanded or led us to do.
Jesus gave her the highest compliment—she has done what she could. God expects no more from us than what we can do. But take care that you don’t make excuses and set your sights so low, that you believe you can do nothing.
We may not be able to do great things for the Lord, but every one of us can do something for the Lord that will delight His heart! Tithe and give to missions, even if some think it is a waste. Live a pure life until (& after) marriage, even if others tempt and ridicule. Surrender your life to serve the Lord, even at the loss of friends or family.
Mr 14:9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
Consider – What an amazing statement, that not only honors Mary, but prophesies the preservation of God’s Word and of churches with pastors who preach it.
