Pr 3:13-14 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. 14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

Over the last few months, we’ve been hearing the word happy used in many contexts. We hear “Happy Thanksgiving,” “Happy Holidays,” “Happy New Year,” etc.. One thing is for certain and that is that people are craving happiness.

God’s Word tells us in our text verse that, “happy is the man that findeth wisdom.”

Verse fifteen says, “For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.”

Literally, the result of wisdom and understanding is better than money, and wisdom brings true happiness.

Unfortunately, the world pushes people to foolishly believe that silver and gold will bring happiness when Scripture teaches differently. For many individuals, their jobs, career, and income have become their God. The Bible says in Psalm 144:15, “Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.”

If we want true happiness, then the Lord must have the preeminence in our life over the cares of this life. The example that Jesus laid out in the New Testament of how He cared for the poor and needy is one for us to follow.  Proverbs 14:21 says, “He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.”

True happiness does not come from the ways of this world.  True happiness comes from the wisdom of God’s Word and from serving the Lord in sincerity and in truth. This happiness is way better than silver and gold.

Consider – Verse 19. Since God used wisdom & understanding to create everything, without them, we do not know how to properly live in His world, and thus be happy.
