Ps 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

David had tasted of the Lord’s goodness, and he calls upon us to experience the same.

Taste and sight are physical senses. We usually see (look at & inspect) something before we taste it. Here, we are to taste first. That does require an exercise of trust. But once we do taste of the Lord’s goodness, we see that He is, indeed, Good.

  • 1Pe 2:3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

Jesus certainly did experience suffering, and Paul often went to bed hungry. Yet, he was eventually fed and kept alive as long as God so willed. Jesus’ fulfillment and Paul’s fulfillment were not found in lives of ease. They were found in knowing the Lord and doing His will.

Hunger pangs are death pangs—only when your God-given mission of life is complete. We are not immune from the assaults of the devil and the consequences of the Fall.

Yet, it is in such times of distress that we are driven to taste and see that the LORD is good, regardless of the situation of life we are experiencing. Is He not good, ALL THE TIME? The Lord is good in His benefits, but more than that, the Lord is good IN HIMSELF. When we “taste” Him, we are filled. And, our Good Lord and Saviour will provide even our physical needs, as long as He wills us to be here.

So, if we really have tasted that the Lord is gracious to us, we should want to share that goodness with others. Watch how fervently an ant evangelizes the good news. Lay a piece of food on the table, and then place an ant on it. Watch him scurry off down the leg and seek his fellow ants. When you see him return, he will be followed by a long train of his fellows. They obviously understood that something up there tastes good!

Consider: To lack Christ is to lack everything. To have Christ is to have everything you need.

Smiley: A guy walks into a lumberyard and asks for some 2x4s. The clerk asks, "How long do you need them?" The guy answers, "A long time. We're gonna build a house."
