Re 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

A few years ago, while sleeping soundly, I awoke with a hot flash. Many of you ladies can certainly relate!  Wide awake, I was flinging the covers and reaching for my  fan. I began to think of my dear grandmother, born in 1897 who was always red-faced,  perspiring, and wiping her face with her apron.  She was probably having a hot flash on top of the fact that there was no air conditioning.

I wondered—just when did air conditioning come? Popular Mechanics tells that in 1758 of the discovery of the cooling effect of evaporation.  The process continued related to help in many needful ways for printing and spinning yarn with less humidity. Air conditioning first became more available to homes in the 1950”s. It hasn’t even been a hundred years yet!

I then began to think of all the modern conveniences over the last 75 years that has brought,  at least to our country, less pain, effort, and stress in life. Up until now, the history of the world has lived basically the same. Life was hard to just survive each day.

But now due to many advances in modern technology, we no longer feel all the effects of the curse as we once did. We do not need God. We don’t have to beg Him for rain for our crops or to quench our thirst. We have water and food in abundance with no effort. We have medicine and doctors to treat most diseases and painkillers to deaden our pain. We are rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing, not even God.  SO WE THINK!

However, we are wretched, miserable, poor,  and blind and naked. We are still under the curse, but we don’t recognize it as much anymore. We have it all, but we don’t have God.

That was the greatest curse given in Genesis. Separation from God Himself. Today we do not see God high and lifted up. We have a low view of God as a nation.  There is a famine for the Word of God and His presence.

May we return unto the Great Creator God.

Reflection—You will never learn that God is all you need until He is all you have.
