Ps 37:7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
So often we associate rest with relaxation and comfort. Certainly relaxation and comfort can result in much needed restoration after hard days at work or stressful situations. Scripture goes a little deeper with the topic of rest.
For example, the first time the word rest appears in the Bible is in Genesis 8:9, “But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.”
In this context of Noah and the flood, the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot. When the dove returned to the ark, Noah put out his hand and brought the dove back into the ark. The dove found rest in the presence of Noah.
Just like Noah, Jesus reached out his hand to Peter as he was drowning. On the cross of Calvary, Jesus stretched out His arms to become sin for us. Today, He is reaching out His hands to provide rest for sin-stricken, troubled souls.
Psalm 37:7 says to “rest in the Lord.” We are safe and secure in the Lord, and no man is able to pluck us out of His hand, as the Bible says in John Chapter 10.
In Exodus 33:14, the Bible says, “And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.”
I am thankful for opportunities to relax and recover for physical needs. I am even more grateful for the presence of God in Whom we can find true rest.
