Behold, The Camels Were Coming

Ge 24:61-63 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. 62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the south country. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.

One of the wonders of God’s Word is when it tells a story of actual events, and at the same time, paints a portrait of future events.  The prophetic nature of these stories with dual meanings are unexplainable apart from being supernaturally inspired by God. They are referred to by Bible scholars as internal proofs of divine inspiration.

Although I appreciate the scholarship of these learned men, and use their material in my sermon preparation, my greatest benefit from these passages come from how the Scripture speaks to me and warms my heart.  I remember a professor in Bible college who once said to us, “Study to show yourself approved, but never let your Bible become just a textbook to you.”

The beauty of Genesis 24 is revealed the deeper you look.  The story of Abraham’s servant sent to find a bride for his son Issac is a picture of the Father sending the Holy Spirit to find a bride for the Son.  In the New Testament, more clues and details come into focus as we look closer into the depths of the story.

In a day in which I am becoming increasingly concerned about the direction of the world, I see many troubling things.  I am concerned for my country and how far and how fast we have gone away from our founding principles.  I am concerned how our culture seems to be slipping away.  I am concerned about our churches losing their power and influence, as worship is manward not Godward.  All because of what these trends are doing to our children.

But there is one thing I am not concerned about—the soon coming of our Lord Jesus Christ!

None of these events is taking God by surprise, and we can rest assured that He has everything under control—and at the right time, the appointed time, the “camels will be coming” to take His Bride to her new home.

The servant was waiting at a well for Rebekah, just like Jesus was waiting at a well for another woman. They both would ask for a drink of water.  Both women would get more than they ever imagined, because the well is deep!

Consider – Look down into the well, draw & drink. Then look up, camels are coming!
