Col 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
The Bible here commands us to put to death any sin that enslaves our body. The believer is to take the various parts of his body and put them to death in so far as sin is concerned. Paul concludes this verse by saying if we covet something, we turn that object into an idol—we make it our god.
Some people make a god out of money. They are obsessed with accumulating wealth.
For others it is status. They want the manager’s job, they say, “Whatever it takes, I’m going to get that job.” Or, it may be an athletic goal. I read about a young tennis star who said, “All I’ve ever wanted is to be number one in the world. It’s all I’ve lived for. Nothing else matters to me, and I won’t stop until I get it.”
We all have dreams, desires and ambitions. And it is not wrong to have them. But we must not put anything ahead of God. If we do so, we have made that goal or object into an idol. We must keep a Biblical perspective. Always put the Lord and His will for your life as your number one goal.
Consider: The best cure for covetousness is to think of something to give instead of something to get.
