Mt 16:24 …If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Jesus makes things so simple. He tells us in just a few words what we need to do to draw close to Him: Come, Learn, Follow.
First, we must COME to Christ in repentance and accept His wonderful salvation. He calls ALL sinners to “come unto me.” This frees us from our burden of sin which has kept us laden down. Upon receiving God’s great gift of grace and mercy, we finally have rest in our souls. He wants us to enjoy His peace and the rest that only He can provide. The best decision you can ever make is to trust Christ as your Saviour.
Second, once we have received His free gift of salvation, He encourages us to take on His yoke and LEARN about Him. There is so much to learn that we can never exhaust all the Bible has to say concerning our Saviour. From Creation through Revelation, we can read and learn about Christ—from the beginning of the world to the beginning of eternity.
We learn about His character, the prophecies concerning His life and death, His miracles, His love and compassion, His teaching, and much more. John tells us that although the Bible has much to say about Christ, the world could not contain the books that would be written if the many other things He did were recorded (John 21:25). So learn all you can about this blessed Saviour!
Third, Christ calls us to FOLLOW Him. Just as he called the twelve apostles—Mt 4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men—He calls us. Christ wants us to walk in His footsteps, to be transformed through renewed minds, to love sinners, to treat people with compassion, to go and teach all nations, to see converts baptized, to teach those who are converted the principles of Christianity.
It’s a big job. It’s the work of a lifetime. It’s never ending.
Which step are you on in this never-ending journey to COME, LEARN, FOLLOW? Maybe you’ve come to Christ and accepted Him as Saviour, but you haven’t gone any farther. Let me encourage you. The more you learn about Christ, the closer you will want to follow Him.
