“WHY IS CHRISTMAS SO SPECIAL?”
Matthew 2:11 – “And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.”
This verse illustrates what is so special about Christmas. It is being together with God and family. If you have any feelings at all, think what made the day special. It is thinking of others and what gift would be special for them. I have been touched by a dad and daughter buying a special gift for mom. It is eating together with fellowship over something made especially for you. It is talking over past events. It is meditating on God and His unmerited goodness and provision during the past year.
Recently my wife Paula’s physical therapist and several of her family members came and put on a Christmas party for the children in the Lighthouse Home in Costa Rica. They had gifts for every child, set up a bounce house and grilled a wonderful lunch for all the children and staff. A few days later one of the boys who grew up at the Lighthouse Home provided a very nice Christmas party for all the children. He brought several of his friends from work and they provided gifts and a nice meal – they played games and our children had another great day. I know what it meant for our children because I also grew up in an orphanage home totally forgotten by my family. If you want a blessing this Christmas, find someone who is needy or alone and be a blessing to them. Most of all share the “Good News” of salvation with them.
Why not make it the priority of our lives all year? Helping others and sharing the “Good News” of the gospel with those who are lost should be on our hearts and minds all year.
Jesus said the great commandment of the law was to love the Lord with all your heart and to love others as yourself. If we open our eyes there are many in need physically and spiritually all around us. There are many that would be grateful if you did something thoughtful for them. The three wise men did something special for Mary and Joseph, who were poor and unwanted. May God help us to do something special for those who are in need.
Wit and Wisdom – Yes, it is a blessing to those that we help; but I have found that the one who is blessed the most is the one who does the giving.
Point to Ponder - Wife to husband: "This Christmas let's give each other sensible gifts like ties and fur coats."
