SUSTAINED BY A RIGHT SPIRIT

Proverbs 18:14 – “The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?”

When the writer of Proverbs made this statement, he already had observed that “a merry heart doeth good like a medicine” (Proverbs 17:22).  That is, a person’s ATTITUDE toward trial and infirmity is extremely important in helping him win in the battle of life when he is distressed or bitterly disappointed.  A courageous, joyous individual weathers such storms much better than one who is always pessimistic and morose.

Beyond this general observation, Paul speaks of the additional resources of grace which God provides for His saints.  The apostle prays for his converts in Ephesus that they might be strengthened with might by God’s Spirit “in the inner man” (Eph. 3:14-16).  He knew that empowered by the Lord they could meet any calamity with serenity and holy composure.

A Christian lady always faithful in the work of the Lord was greatly loved by everyone.  She would manifest a beautiful spirit even under the most trying circumstances.  When asked why she was never disheartened by afflictions and various annoyances, she replied, “I have a special recipe for all such afflictions.  For vexations caused by people I apply affection, and for those caused by circumstances I apply prayer.  Even when infirmities or unexpected obstructions hinder my well-laid plans, I simply whisper with joy, “Thy will be done.”

Dear Christian friends, if you find yourself out of sorts and easily frustrated by life’s trials, pray with David, “O God, renew a right spirit within me” (Ps. 51:10).
