Ro 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Let's admit it. It's not always easy to get along with everyone. The fact that this verse says, "If it be possible," implies that there may be times when it is NOT possible. Have you been there? Have you tried your best to live peaceably, but some people just won't cooperate with your plans?
The truth is. We cannot, and never will be able to make everyone around us live peaceably.
That's it then! People are impossible to live with. The Bible even says so. Right? Wrong!
If you read the rest of Romans chapter 12 you'll find that God has a lot to say about getting along with others. In fact, much of the New Testament homes in on this topic. How can we love our neighbor as Christ commanded if we are not willing to put in the effort of trying to live peaceably?
To put it plainly—Are we even trying to get along?
It's so easy to put all the blame on other people, but Romans chapter 12 is specifically addressing the Christian, not "the disagreeable person." What are you, as a Christian doing on a daily basis to live peaceably with others?
Yes, there are some people that you may not be able to get along with. But what of the people that "just rub you the wrong way?" What about the people that are too quiet or too loud – people that annoy you or avoid you – people that are selfish or bullies? What about the person that hurt your feelings or offended you? "If it be possible, AS MUCH AS LIETH IN YOU, live peaceably with ALL men."
We've established that it is not always possible to live peaceably, but for the majority of the time that it IS possible. Are you giving it your best?
This is the first in a series of short Bible studies on Romans chapter 12. The goal is to open our eyes to the fact that our testimony as Christians, our willingness to live peaceably, and our efforts to love people have a huge impact on spreading the Gospel.
We may never know the impact we've had on people until we get to Heaven. What will be said of you?
Consider – Instead of putting others in their place, try putting yourself in their place.
