Where Is The Lord God Of Elijah

2Ki 2:13-14 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; 14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.

I look forward to my daily Bible reading wherever my schedule leads me, but when I come to the books of history, especially I and II Kings, I get very excited to read the stories of great men.  Upon concluding the book of I Kings, the narrative seamlessly continues into II Kings, commencing from the very point where the first book concluded.

The division of the two books is where the narratives of the two prophets, Elijah the elder, and Young Elisha, the new.  The stories of both prophets are unmatched in the number of kings they confronted who had departed from serving the Lord, and in the number and scale of the miracles performed.

In chapter two, we have the story of Elijah literally passing the mantel of his office to Elisha. Three times on their journey from Gilgal to the Jordan river, Elijah told the younger prophet to “Tarry here,” and three times Elijah replied,  “As the Lord liveth and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee.”

Undeterred by the old prophet’s request to turn back, and by the counsel of his fellow preachers, his determination to remain faithful to serve Elijah to the end would be rewarded by his mentor granting him one last request.  In verse nine we find the famous phrase, “let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.”

In dramatic fashion, Elijah is taken up to Heaven in a chariot of fire, casting his mantel on to Elisha.  As the young prophet returns to the river they had just crossed in miraculous fashion, he takes the mantel, strikes the water, and asks “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?”  The waters parted and Elisha goes on to be used of God to perform twice the miracles of his predecessor.

Many of my heroes of the faith may not be known to most, men like Galen Bare and Wayne Crenshaw, two of my pastors of my youth.  Sam Sparks, W.E. Dowell, two of my favorite preachers.  Many times I have asked, “Where is the Lord God of __________,” and put one of their names in the blank.

In this day, we need another Elijah.
