Don’t Be Forgetful

Ps 103:2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

Some people have amazed me with the ability of their excellent memory.  Dad (father-in-law) was like that, even till he was moved to Heaven at age 84.

It is unfortunate to have lapsing memories.  Some can remember troubles, losses, and difficulties, better than they do the mercies and blessings of their lives.  We need to take the time to do some remembering of the goodnesses our Lord has brought into our lives.

God challenges us in this Psalm to not be forgetful of His many, many benefits.

In verse 1, we are to praise His Holy Name.  It’s a wonderful and beautiful Name.  It’s a powerful Name, that commands knees to bow and tongues to confess.

In verses 2-5, God reminds us of His many benefits—forgiveness, healing, redemption, lovingkindness, tender mercies, physical and spiritual renewal… and the list goes on.

Perhaps a lack of remembering and being thankful is the result of taking His blessings for granted.  When we are stressed and just don’t feel normal or good, all too often our focus is on the diffcult circumstances, instead of the benefits all around us and in us.  This sin-cursed world can only offer God’s children a crown of thorns in the end.

During difficult times, turn your heart and mind to eternal things.  We can be so blessed just to realize that our relationship with the Lord Jesus is eternal.  We can know that even on our very worst days we are still saved—still forgiven—still redeemed—still blessed—and still one twinkle of the eye away from a complete and eternal transformation.

Simple words can bring encouragement. “God loves me. I am saved. Heaven is my home.” We are sons and daughters of the Lord God, recipients of His unending love and tender mercies. And we can have a peace and inner satisfaction that this world cannot offer.

The challenges of life are merely temporary, but the benefits of God’s goodness and mercy are eternal. We need to take our eyes off of the things we can see—the afflictions and difficulties of this life—and focus on those things we cannot see—the eternal blessings.

2Co 1:3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

Consider – There is never a moment when God is forgetful of His children.
