Php 4:7 And the peace of God....
Philippians 4:6-8 are some of my favorite verses! Really, the whole book of Philippians is a personal favorite, but especially these verses. They lay out a simple recipe for, “The Peace of God.”
Have you ever needed God’s peace in your life? The peace that you don’t deserve and you can’t explain, but God gives you anyway? Can you picture in your mind, a time when you had that peace? Do you remember how it felt when your heart and mind were kept by God’s peace?
I think everyone desires to have the peace of God, but we don’t always follow God’s recipe. There is a keyword in verse 6 that we tend to overlook. That word is “thanksgiving.”
We know that we aren’t supposed to worry. We know that we need to pray, and ask God for help. But this part of the recipe – that is, giving thanks – is somehow easy to miss. Prayer and supplication are supposed to go along “with thanksgiving.” It’s kind of like the gravy that goes along with the turkey and mashed potatoes. Thanksgiving should smother all of our prayers. It should be a part of our trust in God and our requests to God.
People, many times try to change the recipe, and follow their own way to gain peace. But our own recipes don’t work in God’s kitchen. If we want the peace of God in our lives, we need to follow “His” recipe. And thanksgiving is a key ingredient that can’t be left out!
When we begin our prayers with genuine giving of thanks, it forces us to take our mind off of ourselves, and put it on Christ. Think about it. Instead of always jumping to, “Lord, please heal me,” we can thank the Lord that we are still alive and breathing. Instead of going straight to, “Lord, please deliver me,” we can thank Him for His purpose in our lives.
We can thank God that we have the ability to pray at all. We can thank Him for the ability to see. If you can’t see, then you can thank Him that you can hear. If you can’t hear, then you can thank Him that you have a mind to think and learn. We can thank Him for family, friends, and even strangers – for food, water, and shelter. The list could go on.
Consider – Wherever we are, and whatever the situation, God knows. He sees us (Jehova-Roi). And if we want the peace of God in our lives, we can’t forget “Thanksgiving.”
Yes, even in March.
