Christian Mind #1—Sound Mind

2Ti 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

The 1828 definition of SOUND is—Founded in truth; firm; strong; valid; solid; that cannot be overthrown or refuted; as sound reasoning; a sound argument; a sound objection; sound doctrine; sound principles.

As God’s children, we can see that God has given us a sound mind, not the spirit of fear.

The 1828 definition describes the word sound as being founded in truth. In Psalm 119:80, the Bible says “Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.”

It is so important that we become rooted and grounded in God’s Word, the foundation of truth upon which we stand. A sound mind is one that we should possess because we have an adversary walking about seeking whom he may devour.

Another definition is—Not broken or decayed; not defective; as a sound ship.

Everywhere we look, people seem to be broken and hurting.  We recognize that this pain is a result of sin and of living in the world.  With that in mind, our churches are full of people who claim to know the Lord, and yet struggle with sin, depression, brokenness, along with many other problems.

Such things ought not be because God has given us a sound mind.  The key is yielding to the Holy Spirit in our lives and not in yielding to the flesh. As Christians, we become imbalanced when we have the Holy Spirit yet yield to the flesh, which leads to instability and trouble.

This problem is why James tells that a double-minded man is unstable.

Jas 1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Consider – Let us take time to yield to the Holy Spirit’s working in our heart, read and apply God’s Word on a daily basis, and enjoy the Lord’s provisions in our lives.
