2Co 1:3-4 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
The Bible tells in Job 14:1 “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.” Hard times are inevitable, and difficulty seems to appear on a regular basis in this sin-cursed world. Although life has its struggles, we can rejoice in the fact that we are victorious in Christ.
In our text verse, we see that God is the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort. When we look to the book of John, we read, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (14:26)
The Holy Ghost is our Comforter that leads us into all truth. If we compare these passages with Romans chapter fifteen verse number four, we read, “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
The Bible says that He is the God of all comfort. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter sent by God the Father. The Bible again states that through the Scriptures we have comfort. These three are a beautiful picture of the Trinity and demonstrate how God brings comfort to our lives.
As children of God, we are not to look to secular activities or medication for peace and comfort, but we are to look to God’s Word and rely on the Holy Spirit. He is the Father of mercies and God of all comfort. It is through His Word that we may have hope.
Having received the comfort God has given us through tribulation, we have a responsibility to help comfort those around us who are afflicted. We have been given the ministry of reconciliation; therefore, we have the responsibility to point people to Christ, to share His Word, and to give the truth and love of the gospel.
The world is lost and hurting and in need of comfort. We have that comfort! May we always be about sharing the comfort and love of God to a lost and dying world.
Consider – It helps us to willingly endure difficulties when we remember the positive fruit God intends.
