Mt 11:29-30 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Recently, I read a story of a little boy who was helping his father move books from an attic to a room downstairs. It was important to the boy that he help his father, even though he was probably more of a hindrance than a help. However, the father was wise and patient, and he knew that the main object was not the moving of the books in a timely manner, but rather working alongside his son.
The father had some rather large study books, and soon the young boy found that carrying them down the steps was quite a challenge. On one occasion the boy dropped his pile of books several times. He became frustrated, and sitting down on the stairs he began to cry. He was upset because he was not strong enough to carry the books down the narrow stairway. He was hurting inside and felt like he was of no help to his father.
The wise and loving father quickly responded to the boy in despair. Without a word, he picked up the dropped books, put them in the arms of the boy, scooped up both the boy and the books into his own arms, and carried them down the stairs. That is how the remainder of the books were moved. The boy carrying the books, and the dad carrying the boy, both enjoying the work and time together.
Oh, how this illustrates the relationship our heavenly Father desires for us to have with Him!
In Matthew 11:29-30, God told us that He wants to be the one carrying the load.
A key word in verse 29 is – TAKE. That means that we must have a willingness to be like the little boy, to sit down to our prideful attitude of, “I can do this,” and let God carry the load.
When we yoke up with Jesus, we are granted the privilege of enjoying not only rest for our souls, but a multitude of blessings as He exercises His mighty power.
Consider – Isn’t the fellowship sweet when we are in the arms of Jesus!
