He Means What He Says

Heb 6:17-18 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

It is of great comfort to know that God cannot lie to us. Jesus said that the the devil was a murderer from the beginning, and the Lord connected that thought to being a liar.

  • Joh 8:44 ... the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

False prophets are liars, too. And God even indicts all of mankind as having been born speaking lies.

  • Ps 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

We are all born with a wicked sin nature, and God says that one manifestation of that nature is that we are liars by nature. Thankfully, Jesus died for us. He didn’t die for a world of saints but for a world of sinners. Ro 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

The point is that God is a truth-speaking God. He does not play word games, trying to deceive, but He speaks all the truth and only the truth.

This "inability" of God to lie is linked to His promises. These promises offer forgiveness of sins and everlasting life—Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;

God wants us to know that He will not say one thing, and then later change His mind and do something else. In a word, if He said it, He means it.

As a child, I said silly things, like—If I’m lying I’m dying—I swear on a stack of Bibles—Cross my heart, hope to die. These were childish oaths, trying to convince someone that I was telling the truth. If I hadn’t been a liar before, such vain oaths would not have been needed.

God, however, has never lied. The truthfulness of His character is sufficient to substantiate His Word. When He speaks, He means what He says.

Consider – When He says, “I love you”—He’s talking to you, and He means it.

Smiley – Never trust atoms; they make up everything.
