What God Joined Together

Ps 101:2 I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.
In the marriage ceremony, it is common to end by saying, “What God hath joined together let not man put asunder.”
God is the One Who ordained marriage. The example is given in Genesis 2:22 when the Creator Father made a woman and “brought her to the man.” In a sense, the Father gave away His daughter to Adam. And just to make sure we understood what took place, God refers to Eve as Adam’s wife in verse 24. Eve was not just a move-in, or shack-up situation, or trial live together for a while exercise. God performed the ceremony, and she became Adam’s wife.
Ge 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Because the family is His institution, the Lord is the One Who joins the husband and wife together in marriage. He started the family with a man and a woman, and He has not changed the structure since its beginning. The laws of man, nor his opinions, can change what God has done. If it does not meet His criteria, then it is not something that God has joined together, and therefore it is not a marriage.
As the Psalm tells us, David was wanting to be the right example in his “house.” He wanted to walk within it with a perfect, mature heart. He wanted to behave wisely within its four walls.
It is a lesson for us. We should be as much a Christian at home as we appear to be at church. Since the Lord is the One Who joins a couple together, shouldn’t His presence be acknowledged in the home continually? Our home should be a place of honor to the Lord. It should be a place of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving.
A home without the Lord is headed for disaster. Let us yield to the Lord and acknowledge His rightful place in our home.
Reflection—Spend less time worrying about who is right and more time deciding what is right.
