Romans 12:11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
Many times I have read and even quoted this verse in conversations regarding business. While the context is certainly straightforward, it’s important to remember the purpose behind our actions.
The verse speaks of not being slothful in business and fervent in spirit. We know that fervent has to do with having a passionate intensity. With these commands, the verse concludes with the phrase “serving the Lord.” These words are important because we can be diligent in our business endeavors with a fervent spirit and yet be for our own personal gain and consumption.
Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Our deeds and actions should all be done in the name of the Lord Jesus with grateful hearts. The gifts and abilities He has given us should drive our hearts to positions of humility and service rather than to pride and selfishness. When we perform actions with the heart of serving the Lord, it is then that we truly can live with intended purpose.
No matter what our occupation, desires, or goals may be, we should faithfully serve the Lord and do everything for His honor and glory.
1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
Reflection—Let self be forgotten. Let your eye be fixed on God. Let the promotion of His glory be your object in all you do.
