Flee These Things

1 Timothy 6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
One of the most misquoted phrases in all of the Bible is that “money is the root of all evil.” In the book of I Timothy 6:10, the Bible states, “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
By reading this verse, we clearly see that the love of money is the issue, not the money itself. Verse ten goes on to give details on the result of a covetous life spent pursuing this love. Verse eleven then follows with a command to flee these things. In fact, earlier the chapter speaks of the value of contentment. As God’s children, we are to be content in our earthly goods, flee covetous desires, and follow after righteousness.
Our text verse mentions the words righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness. Compare these words to those found in verses four and five envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth.
While money itself is not evil, the lustful desires that are often associated with it are.
Our challenge is to flee the enticing cares of this life that lead to emptiness and to follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
Colossians 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Reflection—The best Christian living comes from minds fixed on heavenly things.
