Exodus 35:10 And every wise hearted among you shall come, and make all that the LORD hath commanded;
In my Bible reading, I came across the words “wise hearted” in the book of Exodus. I had never really paid attention to the phrase before and began to explore it in more depth. The Biblical expression “wise hearted” speaks of individuals who possess wisdom and a heart of understanding to apply that wisdom in a way that lines up with God’s will. In the Old Testament wisdom is often associated with skill, understanding, and a heart in agreement with God’s purposes.
The phrase is featured in the construction of the Tabernacle in Exodus where God speaks to Moses about selecting skilled workers. He says, “…in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee” (Exodus 31:6). Here “wise hearted” refers to those gifted with skill, understanding, and technical ability whose wisdom is divinely inspired and directed towards fulfilling God’s commands.
God had very specific instructions as to the construction of the Tabernacle, the furniture within it, the curtains, etc. He wanted skilled men and women to do their best for His House. The “wise hearted” received their wisdom and skills from God – they had divine inspiration. They also were willing to obey God’s commands. They were skilled with craftsmanship, allowing them to create and build according to the instructions God had given to Moses.
But more than technical skills, they possessed a deep understanding of spiritual truths – their hearts were in tune with God’s purposes – they had spiritual insight.
The “wise hearted” in the Bible show us how believers are to use their God-given talents and abilities in service to Him. There is a harmony between divine inspiration and human action.
True wisdom is demonstrated through obedience, skillful labors, and a heart devoted to God.
Reflection—Are you “wise hearted”?
