This Child Is God

Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
The big news of Christmas is that God became Man over 2000 years ago so we could have a relationship with Him. Today, if your children take a world religion class in college, most likely, the professor will tell them there is no difference between the Christian God and the gods of other religions.
They’re almost right. All world religions are essentially the same. Every religion in the world requires man to do something to work their way up to God. That is the thing that all “religions” have in common. They all require man to do things in an attempt to become divine.
Only Biblical Christianity does not have the goal of getting to God through good works or any other means. Biblical Christianity is all about a relationship with a Holy God!
Religion is man trying to get to God. Relationship is God coming down to man. And here’s the greatest thing—God wants to have a relationship with you! Look at verse 23 again. You must ask yourself, why would the Son of God subject Himself to that?
Here’s the answer—He had to endure everything we would have to endure. He endured physical struggles, and He endured hunger. He did this so we could have a relationship with Him and He with us!
The word “relationship” comes from the root word “relate.” In our sin and weakness, there is no way we could ever work our way into being good enough to relate to God. So, because we could never relate to God, God reached down into history and took on the coat of flesh for us.
This child is God!
Reflection—There was NO OTHER way for God to have a relationship with you than through Jesus, THE ONLY WAY.
