The Threshing Floor

Ruth 3:2 And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.
The threshing floor holds a profound and sacred place in Holy Scripture. It was a physical location of hard labor, separation, and ultimate harvest. Yet, spiritually, it represents the place where Almighty God deals with His people, separating the precious from the vile, and revealing His sovereign mercy.
We first see the spiritual weight of this location in Ruth. Ruth came to the threshing floor of Boaz in secret, seeking redemption. Ruth 3:9 records her words: “Spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.” It was on the threshing floor that her life was transformed from poverty to provision. This beautifully pictures the sinner coming to Christ, our ultimate Kinsman-Redeemer, finding grace and covering at His feet.
The threshing floor is also a place of divine judgment turned to mercy. When King David sinned by numbering the people, a deadly plague struck Israel. The plague stayed at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. David bought the site to build an altar. (1 Chronicles 21:26) This very threshing floor became the foundation for Solomon’s glorious temple. Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound, turning a place of judgment into a house of prayer.
.
Finally, John the Baptist uses this imagery to describe Christ’s purging work. Matthew 3:12 warns, “Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
The Lord still brings us to the threshing floor today. He uses heavy trials to separate the chaff of pride and flesh from the golden grain of faith. Praise Him for the purging, for it yields a holy harvest.
Reflection—There is an eternal separation and destiny for both the wheat and the chaff.
