The Gospel Is Preached

Luke 7:22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
In Luke chapter 7, Jesus is performing miracles and curing infirmities. In verse 22, He gives the description of how the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, and the dead are raised. At the end of the verse, Jesus makes a clear, distinction with the poor. He says “to the poor the gospel is preached.”
The true need of the poor today is not financial and economic relief, but rather they need the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Creator of the universe left His heavenly home and became poor so that we may be made rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
Providing food and water to the poor is a wonderful thing and certainly needs to be done. Helping the needy in financial distress is a worthy cause. However, we must remember that everything we do must be done for the glory of God and not for our own glory.
1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
The greatest thing we can give this poor, lost, and dying world is the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Reflection—May the Lord help us preach the gospel to the poor.
