Philippians 4:11 …I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
Have you ever had a really good day? I mean, a truly super fantastic sort of day? The kind where you just can’t help but smile as you lay your head on your pillow for the night, replaying the events of the day? I can recall many good days like that throughout my life, and I am so thankful to have those days as wonderful memories!
It is so easy to be thankful on those days. Being content just makes sense on days like that.
But it makes me wonder how we are to look at all of the other days. What about the day after a great day? You can’t really top a “best day ever.” It’s hard to compare a really good day to a “normal, back to the grind, average sort of day.” But that doesn’t mean that a day is not good, just because it wasn’t great.
It all boils down to your perspective, and how you respond to a really great day, an average day, or an outright bad day.
There are two words in God’s Word that stand out in regard to this—contentment and thankfulness. To learn these traits is to be more Christ-like, something we all should strive for.
- Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have….
- 1 Thessalonians 5:16 Rejoice evermore. 17Pray without ceasing. 18In every thing give thanks….
- Psalm 100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
We must learn to respond with the right attitude no matter how the day has gone. We must start and end our days with an attitude of gratefulness, then we will know what true contentment is.
Reflection—We should be just as thankful the day after Thanksgiving, as we were the day before.
