Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
It was the year 1707 when Isaac Watts saw his hymn “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” first published in a hymnal. Since that time this beautiful hymn has been sung by thousands of Christians around the world. This is a powerful song that causes the saved and unsaved to take another look at the cross and think about what it cost to purchase our redemption.
This song about the crucifixion was being sung this January at a mission Church in the Dominican Republic. The pastor stated, “Our unsaved neighbor was passing by the Church. She had no plans to stop; but as she heard the song about the Wondrous Cross, she stopped for a moment to listen. When the song finished, the pastor began to preach on the cross. She could not move; the song and the preaching of the cross brought her to salvation. At the close of the service she came and hugged the pastor’s wife and thanked her for not giving up on her.
There are many topics that need to be preached and shared with friends; but let’s not forget the main subject—the death, burial, and resurrection of our Saviour.
Reflection—To glory in the cross is to glory in the One Who shed His Blood and died there for sinners.
