Psalm 119:12 Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.
There are many rich treasures in the Word of God. By studying them we can learn to live in a way that pleases God. Psalm 119 asks God to connect the psalmist’s life with the Word of God. One of the repeated phrases in this psalm is for God to teach the psalmist His statutes. It appears at least ten times.
Do you desire to continually learn and be taught God’s Word and statutes? Does your heart yearn to be taught the path of God and to fix your heart on Him?
God’s statutes are permanently established decrees and rules given by God to guide human behavior, worship, and daily life. They are timeless principles of right and wrong, honesty, and love for God and others (such as the Ten Commandments).
Psalm 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
Studying Biblical statutes is a very helpful way to gain insight into God’s character and to know Him better. They communicate what He reveals as right and wrong, and God does not change (Malachi 3:6 – “For I am the LORD, I change not….”).
In the New Testament Paul speaks of the importance of the law and the prophets in his instruction to Timothy (2 Timothy 3:14-17). Paul wanted Timothy to remember that while his salvation came through his faith in Christ, God’s commandments, statutes, and judgments would give him valuable understanding and guide him in his spiritual growth.
Reflection: Psalm 119:33 HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.
