Snared Therein

Deuteronomy 7:25-26 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God. 26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.
Israel had many nations that wanted to destroy them. Deuteronomy 7:1 names several, “…the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;”
We draw a spiritual application from this passage that aligns with Paul’s warning of lack of contentment and love of money in 1 Timothy.
1 Timothy 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
The warning of the desire for the silver and gold from the graven images is still applicable to us today. The god of this world has used the lustful desires for wealth and success to pull God’s children away from serving the Lord. Paul uses the phrase, “But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare” and in Deuteronomy 7, it warns that they will be snared therein.
It is the devil’s desire to take us captive by using snares and traps.
2 Timothy 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
Reflection—May we walk circumspectly as we look and avoid the snares and traps of Satan. May we set our affections on things above, not on this earth, and may we walk freely, shining light into a dark world.
