Eph 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith…
In our weekly evening service with about 40 rehab men, we often come across the question of Eternal Security. It's a six month program, and so we have a new group regularly passing through. They have been exposed to many different ideas and doctrines, so we try to unravel some of the errors they have picked up.
The idea of a believer losing his salvation is quite standard.
No one really wants to lose his salvation. But many believe they have, or can, or they know someone who has. They've heard preachers say that if they blow it, like these men have, they need to be saved again.
So, discounting mere false professors, a believer has to change or undo some things, if he is to lose what God has so graciously given.
One consideration is, What can we do to cause God's Grace To Be Insufficient?
Nothing! Grace is the BASIS of our salvation. Salvation is totally BY GRACE, God's UNMERITED favor—God's Riches At Christ's Expense. God has done something for us that we could NOT do for ourselves. It is eternally sufficient!
There are many works that people do, in an attempt to go to Heaven. Many Scriptures teach us that none of these works can get us a ticket to Heaven. Paul wrote to Titus, Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
The exercise of faith is not a work, as if, man is doing "something"—thus a work. Faith is simply the channel through which God's grace flows into a humble and contrite and believing soul.
Ro 4:2-5 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Though a Woke society is trying to change definitions, GOD'S WORDS cannot be redefined. Grace still means God's unmerited favor. It meant it in the OT. It means it in the NT. It means it in every age that God has given or will give. And it is Eternally Sufficient!
CONSIDER: My evidence that I am saved does not lie in the fact that I preach, or that I do this or that. All my hope lies in this: That Jesus Christ came to save sinners. I am a sinner. I TRUST HIM… that He came to save me, and I am saved. Charles Spurgeon
