THE TRINITY

Matthew 28:19 – “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

The doctrine of the Trinity is clearly taught in the Bible.  While God is ONE in essence, He manifests Himself in three persons.  Note in Matthew 28:19 that the name (singular) of God is “Father,…Son, and …Holy Ghost.”  Even in the Old Testament, which speaks primarily of the oneness of the Almighty, pronouns were used indicating a plurality of persons in the Godhead.  (See the use of the term “us” in Genesis 1:26; 3:22; 11:7, and Isaiah 6:8.)

The Bible ascribes all the attributes and titles of deity to each Person.  Keith L. Brooks says, “If the doctrine of the Trinity is not accepted, then Christ is not divine and the character of His redemptive work is reduced to nothing.  If there is a Trinity…and worship is not accorded to Jesus and the Holy Ghost, then proper adoration is being withheld from two-thirds of the Godhead.

Augustine, the father of theologians, was walking along the ocean shore puzzling over the truth:  three distinct persons, yet only one God.  Suddenly he came upon a lad who was filling a seashell full of water and industriously pouring the liquid in a shallow depression he had made in the sand.  Augustine asked, “What are you doing, young fellow?”  The boy replied, “I am trying to put the sea into that hole!”  “Ah,” said Augustine to himself, “that is what I have been attempting.  Standing at the ocean of infinity, I have been trying to encompass it all with my finite mind.”

Like that Church father of old, we must accept the Trinity even though our restricted intelligence prevents us from absorbing its fullest meaning.

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea
Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty!
God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!
