THE IMPORTANCE OF THE HOME

Deut. 11:18-19 – “Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.  And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

To a great extent America is declining morally and spiritually because of the breakdown of the home.  In fact a great preacher once said, “It is not true that the public school is not the strongest single influence in character education, or that radio, television, movies, and the comics molds the minds more than anything else.  Family associations still play the dominate role.”

Consider the issue from the standpoint of time.  In terms of creative religious work, a child is in Church about 52 hours a year.  He spends nearly 40 hours a week at school, 9 months a year, but he is at home more than 60 hours a week.  The emotional leverage there is also greater!

Loyalties and affections kindled in the home atmosphere provide a drive and instill a sense of authority found nowhere else. The life situation, which is the best setting for education, is natural in the home.  Therefore, it still comes first in the formation of character and ideals in the hearts and minds of children.

The Apostle Paul underscored the importance of spiritual training when he admonished believers to bring up their children “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Eph 6:4).
Moses also emphasized this truth, declaring that parents should faithfully teach their children the Word of God – Deut.6:9).  An elderly lady who was conscious of these fundamental issues frequently prayed, “O Lord, grant that our dwellings may be like the house of Obed-edom, where the Ark of God rested!”

Is your home a dismal desert of sinful frustration where young lives are warped, or is it a spiritual oasis where Christian principles daily stimulate the growth of moral character?

Wit and Wisdom – Home is the chief school of human virtues.

Point to Ponder - A young girl was asked, “Whose preaching brought you to Christ?  “It wasn’t anybody’s preaching, it was Mom and Dad’s practicing,” she replied.
