Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost… (Acts 2:1-4)
In the first few verses of chapter 2, we see some of the most important words ever written! This passage describes something entirely new and amazing! We see the giving of the Holy Spirit and the power for worldwide gospel declaration.
Can you imagine being there in verses 1-4? Imagine if someone had slept in and missed it! There were some amazing signs that happened. They were audible, visual, and verbal.
The first sign is audible in verse 2. The word “suddenly” means this sound came unexpectedly. This is not actual wind but “a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind.” This would have been a sound like a raging tornado that not just filled the room but the entire house!
Verse 6 says, “Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together…” That tells us that it was so loud, it drew people to come and see what it was! This was nothing short of God doing what God does best!
Next, we see the visual. The second sign was extremely bright in verse 3. All that were there received a flame. No one was left out! Fire has always been represented as God’s purifying presence as seen through the Old Testament.
And lastly, we see the verbal. This one is amazing! All 120 believers were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they started speaking in languages they had not spoken before. “Tongues” are intelligible languages. Their hearers understood what they were saying because it was a dialect! And they responded to it in verse 7.
So why did I choose to do this topic today?
The answer is—When was the last time you prayed for the Holy Spirit to help you find your car keys, to help with a situation, or to prepare a heart for salvation?
Reflection—He is real, He is powerful, and He God! Don’t forget just how great He is.
