Lamentations 3:19-23 Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. 20 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me. 21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. 22 It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
I have heard it said, “If not for the mercy of God, that would be me.” When I was younger, that statement didn’t make much sense to me, but the older I get, the better I understand it. Mercy is sometimes described as not getting what we deserve, and grace is getting what we do not deserve. The One Who has the ability to show both and has fresh reserves each morning, is worthy of our honor and praise.
But this passage doesn’t just include those two attributes; it also talks of His compassions and His faithfulness.
The longer we live on this Earth, the more we realize that most people often do not meet our expectations and do let us down. There are people that we put our trust and confidence in, and ultimately, they are unable to fulfill that expectation.
Why not instead put our trust in the One Person Who is literally incapable of ever letting us down?
When the bitterness of this life reminds us of our misery and affliction, instead of focusing on the negative, remember the positive. God is still good, He has a plan, He has fresh mercies in great abundance, and He is incapable of letting us down.
Reflection—When all seems lost, there is always hope, because He is faithful.
