God’s Word Is Needed

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship…
These first Christ-followers were 100% devoted to Christ and to His cause. The most basic essential for any healthy walk with the Lord is a commitment to God’s Word. To truly understand what the impact of this devotion is to our lives, we have to jump forward to Acts 17 and look at the Bereans. In verses 11-12, they paint a picture for us that we can only scratch the surface of today. So, let’s see what we can learn from them.
The most import thing they did was they received the Word in verse 11. The word “noble” means that they were a people of generous spirit, those who were open-minded toward truth, not prejudiced, hostile or suspicious. Our text says that “they received the word with all readiness of mind” or with eagerness. They had an anticipation, an expectancy that God might be speaking specifically to them, and this is what set them apart.
I wonder how many of us come to the Bible with the expectation that God was going to speak to us? Perhaps Bible reading has become merely a habit, and little thought is given to why we are reading it. We need to come with the expectation that God will speak to us.
Why? Because God’s Word is needed.
Next, we see they searched the Word in verse 11. These Bereans weren’t content with the words of Paul. The reasoning of mere mortals was not enough for them. They wanted a more sure word, they wanted a “thus saith the Lord” answer. It says that they searched the Scriptures daily to see whether what they were being taught was true or not.
Reflection—Just as the Israelites had to gather manna daily, so it is the duty and privilege of Christians to study the Word of God every day.
