Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
One of the names of Christ is The Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). Throughout the Scriptures, we are reminded of the peace God imparts to His children; it is part of our spiritual inheritance. Peace is defined as a mental state of calm, serenity, and freedom from worry or anxiety. However, Christians can have their peace disturbed.
Our text verse begins with the word “and.” If the items mentioned in the previous verse of Philippians 4:6 are followed, then you will have “the peace of God which passeth all understanding….” Enemies can interfere with our peace. The first thing mentioned is WORRY (“Be careful for nothing…”). Don’t worry about anything. God is in control, and He will take care of everything that comes into our life. You cannot be filled with worry and experience God’s peace. Trust God and have faith in Him.
A second enemy of peace is PRAYERLESSNESS. We are told to pray about everything (“…in every thing by prayer…let your requests be made known unto God”). We sacrifice God’s promised peace when we do not pray about things. But if we make it a habit to cast all our cares on Him, we will have the peace that He promises. Share your needs and situations with Him. He can take care of them.
The third enemy is LACK OF THANKSGIVING or ingratitude. God says to make our requests known to Him “….with thanksgiving….” Thank God in advance for what He is able and going to do. Thank Him for all He allows in our lives, even the difficult things. Without thanksgiving we might become resentful or bitter. God has a purpose for what comes into our lives. Trust Him.
Reflection—Numbers 6:26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. Do your part so God can bless you with His peace.
