Devotion

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
It is absolutely thrilling when people put their faith in Christ, but that’s only the beginning. We are to equip believers to follow Christ. In Matthew 28:20, it says “teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:”
Here’s what I’m hoping we learn from these two verses: The depth of our devotion will determine our awe and our impact. Look at the word “they” in verse 42. It refers to new believers who “continued stedfastly.” That means they were devoted! I love how the idea of “continued stedfastly” is developed in other passages also.
Acts 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication…. Acts 11:23 Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.
This idea is also more developed about Jesus’ determination to go to the cross. Luke 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.
Just as there was no stopping Jesus from what He came to accomplish, there was no stopping these followers who were resolutely steadfast in their devotion. This should show us that there is no room for casual Christianity in our lives and here’s why—God longs for us to be completely devoted to Him.
For these followers of Christ, their devotion didn’t happen automatically! They decided to become sold-out. They knew the depth of their devotion would determine their impact for God.
Here’s the challenge: How is your devotion to Christ? When was the last time you led someone to the Lord because you can’t help but tell people about Christ?
Reflection—When we are devoted to Christ, everything else just falls into place.
