Mark 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
Do you have bees in your church? “Of course not!” However, they are there, just some more quiet than others. I have noticed at least five types of bees in the average church.
First, let’s explore the Oughta Bee, who is characterized by some of the following statements. “I oughta be doing something for the Lord. I oughta be going to church. I oughta study my Bible. I oughta be witnessing. I oughta visit my neighbors. I oughta love folks. I oughta __________.”
This bee may have some knowledge, wisdom, and discernment, but it is complacent. For the most part this bee knows the right things to do, but it has little or no motivation to do them. It is easily distracted by the things going on around him.
Although the Oughta Bee knows it will not live forever, yet it lives as if there will always be a tomorrow. It feeds from the nectar of TV evangelism and social media postings. Its conscience is mostly satisfied by some churchgoing, doing good things, and living a good life – as the world would see it.
The Oughta Bee is often an emotional bee. When things are good, it is in quite a buzz. When things are down, it quickly loses altitude. Its flight pattern is quite erratic – up and down, way up, down, up, and way down.
Spiritually speaking the Oughta Bee is anemic and often afflicted by offense. Its wings are easily weighed down by the cares of life, as well as the thoughts, actions, and words of others. In time the Oughta Bee has become unproductive and produces no fruit for the Lord.
Thankfully, with a willing spirit, the Lord will turn it into a different type of bee. Stayed tuned.
Reflection—Is the Bible in your heart, or is it an add-on?
