Be a Doer

James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
Faith in God will keep us from crashing. Human reason will fail us at times, but God never fails. His Word keeps us on the right course, as long as we obey it. We must let the soil of our hearts be tilled so the Word of God can be planted, allowed to grow, and put into action.
An old preacher said, “Too many Christians mark their Bibles but never allow their Bibles to mark them! God wants His people to put His Word into action!”
Verse 22 is a command to obedience! Too many Christians live thinking that hearing alone is enough. God says they are deceiving, kidding themselves. Here’s a hard fact—That deception may reveal the ultimate spiritual danger, the danger of not truly being saved.
John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
He knows you but you also know him and obey His voice. God wants a listener to become a disciple, and a disciple is an obedient follower of Jesus.
A doctor’s most annoying patient is the one who won’t follow the doctor’s orders. They will hear the words, but that’s as far as it goes. God also has “problem patients.” These are Christians who hear His Word, understand what they should do, but who don’t follow through.
Many times, the consequences may be very serious. Obeying God is the best prescription for spiritual health. The Lord hasn’t made His Word available just to give us an…interesting read? No, He is preparing us for action.
Reflection—The implanted Word of God only flourishes in the soil of true obedience.
