Genesis 13:8-9 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. 9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
Putting the interests of others ahead of our own is what servanthood is all about. Abraham demonstrated a servant attitude by — (1) Being willing to split up the land that was rightfully his, and (2) By giving his nephew Lot first choice.
As followers of Christ, we can learn to have a servant’s heart. It does not come easy, nor is it natural to our sinful nature. But God will help us to put the needs of others ahead of our own.
Remember Jesus came to earth to serve and to give His life a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45) He put the sinner’s interest and needs before His own.
Reflection—A true servant does not live to himself, for himself, or by himself.
