A Name But No Life

Revelation 3:1 …I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
A church can have a full parking lot, a beautiful building, and a busy calendar, yet still be spiritually dead. Jesus warned the church at Sardis that although it had a reputation for being alive, it was dead. One of the greatest reasons a church loses its spiritual life is that people stop gathering in the name of Jesus and begin gathering for every other reason. A church is not made alive by programs, personalities, or traditions. It’s made alive by the presence of Christ.
What constitutes a dead church?
First, a dead church meets without Jesus as its center. In Matthew 18:20, Jesus did not just say, “Where two or three gather.” He said, “gathered together in my name.”
Unfortunately, many gather in the name of tradition, a denomination, entertainment, for social activity, or even for the pastor. This should not be so! A church must gather in the name of Jesus!
Second, a dead church has activity without the presence of God. Sardis had works, but no spiritual power. A church can have choirs, committees, budgets, and ministries yet lack the moving of the Holy Spirit. Activity is not the same as spiritual life.
And lastly, a living church is known by the name of Jesus. Everything in the New Testament church revolved around Christ. They preached His name. Acts 4:10 “…by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth…” They suffered for His name. Acts 5:41 “…worthy to suffer shame for his name.” They prayed in His name because their confidence was not in themselves—it was in name of Jesus Christ.
We must ask ourselves, “Am I doing what I’m doing for the Lord in my power or His?” If we truly gather in the name of Jesus Christ, He has promised to be in the midst.
Reflecton—Jesus’ presence is what transforms dead religion into living faith.
